Bali International Meeting (BIM) 2007 will
conduct series of 3 meetings and 1 workshop representing:
- the International Asian Monsoon Year 08 (AMY08) Science
Steering Committee;
- the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Joint
Science Committee (JSC) Monsoon Oversight Group (JMOG);
- the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX)
Coordinated Energy and Water Cycle Observation Project (CEOP);
- Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS)
Asian Water Cycle Initiative (AWCI);
The First event is the second international Asian Monsoon
Year 2008 (AMY08) workshop that will be conducted on September
3-4, 2007. This workshop followed the resolution of the First
International Workshop on AMY08 at Beijing, on last April 22-25
2007. This is jointly hosted by CLIVAR and GEWEX. The major
objectives of this workshop are to discuss and finalize the Science
and Implementation Plan for the AMY08. The AMY08 is an integrated
observation and modeling of Asian monsoon variability and
ocean-land-atmosphere interaction in year 2008-2009. It aims at
improvement of physical parameterization schemes in numerical
models, development and enhancement of data assimilation of the
ocean-atmosphere-land system, and better understanding of the
monsoon predictability on intraseasonal-to-interannual time scales.
These objectives will be fulfilled through coordination of the
ongoing and planned field experiments and modeling projects in Asian
monsoon regions. The concept of AMY 08 has been endorsed by WCRP
(World Climate Research Program)/JSC, CLIVAR, and GEWEX (Global
Energy and Water Cycle Experiments) and it has gained grassroots
supports by many national projects, operational centers and monsoon
scientists.
The second event is the PAN-WCRP (World Climate Research
Programme) Monsoon Scoping Meeting that will take date on
September 5, 2007. This one-day meeting aims to scope scientific
issues surrounding the concept of a 5 year International Monsoon
Study (IMS) 2007-2011 and to discuss a preliminary draft of a
strategic plan for such an activity. The IMS will provide a
framework for monsoon research across Asia/Australian, African and
American regions and will address the role of the monsoons in the
global climate system and the responses to, and the interactions of
monsoons with, climate change. The scoping meeting will, in
particular, follow-up the discussion and decisions made at the Joint
Scientific Committee (JSC) for WCRP at Zanzibar in March 2007.
A key part of the agenda for the Bali International Meeting
should be to scope the scientific issues and to create the strawman
"concept paper" for the IMS strategic plan. The fact that the
meeting will be held in conjunction with the AMY and CEOP meetings
will provide us with a good opportunity to resolve any coordination
issues that may exist with these projects.
The Third event is The Seventh CEOP International
Implementation Planning Meeting that will be conducted on
September, 6 8, 2007 and followed by The Fourth event at the end
day meeting on September 9, 2007 for the GEOSS/AWCI International
Coordination Group (ICG). These two meetings are invited by the
World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Global Energy and Water
Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) and the Coordinated Energy and Water Cycle
Observation Project (CEOP).
Phase 1 of CEOP was successfully completed in 2005. At the 2007
meeting of the GEWEX Scientific Steering Group the merger of the
GEWEX Hydrometeorology Panel (GHP) and CEOP was approved, resulting
in a new project called the Coordinated Energy and Water Cycle
Observations Project (CEOP). The new CEOP will function as a
GEWEX panel. A CEOP International Implementation Planning Meeting
was held in Washington DC in March 2007, where agreement was reached
on the overall science objectives and structure for the new CEOP.
A task team is now working on a draft implementation plan. This work
is being carried out in cooperation with the lead scientists in each
component of CEOP. A draft implementation plan will be circulated
one month before the Bali meeting. The plan will be finalized in
Bali and the new CEOP Science Advisory Group (SAG) will lead
discussions at the meeting on how to gain the interest of other
international organizations, including the Global Earth Observation
System of Systems (GEOSS).
Meanwhile, the objectives for the Asian Water Cycle Initiative
(AWCI) is to move forward and implement the baseline idea
approved at the 2nd Asian Water Cycle Symposium held in Tokyo, 9
10 January 2007. International Coordination Group (ICG) will discuss
a draft implementation plan through coordination of related
activities.
The material programs and tentative agenda for all series
workshop and meeting during the Bali International Meeting 2007 will
be provided soon by the representative host meeting/workshop.
